Eagles' Offense Fires Past Patchogue, 38-11

Hauppauge girls varsity basketball wins pre-season match with 3-point shoots.

Hauppauge girls varsity basketball's offense has focused their aim on the net, beating Patchogue-Medford 38-11 Thursday on the road at Patchogue-Medford High School.

"Today is hopefully out of their system," Raiders coach Jeff Hansen said. "Play your worst now, get it over with before the league [schedule] starts. Nothing would go right for us. It was just one of those days. The day's over, the game's over."

Hauppauge's Julie Williams was 5-of-7 from three-point range for the Eagles (5-0) and led all scorers with 15 points. Lindsey Alfano added 12 points for the Hauppauge. The Eagles were firing seemingly at will from beyond the arch, as they were 7-for-15 on the afternoon.

"That was the game," Hansen said, of Hauppauge's three-point shooting. "They hit their shots. We didn't pressure them enough to challenge their shots. Not that we made it easy for them, but we didn't make them work too hard for their shots, and they hit them."

Kierston Berwick led the Raiders with four points.  The Raiders were playing without point guard Alieen Yaeger, who is still out recovering from a hairline fracture in her ankle. Her absence was notable in the Patchogue-Medford backcourt.

"In this league, you need guard play," Hansen said. "We have a couple of good forwards, but someone's got to get them the ball. If we have trouble getting them the ball, we're going to have trouble scoring. That's what happened today."

Hauppauge can hopefully keep momentum and their shooting focus as the Eagles hit the road for their league opener against Huntington on Dec. 21, 6:15 p.m.
