Eagles Scoreboard: Baseball, Softball Teams Battle For League Titles

Also, Hauppauge girls lacrosse takes aim at undefeated season.

As the spring sport season is coming to a close, Hauppauge's varsity baseball and softball teams are battling to win their division titles. The Lady Eagles lacrosse team is taking aim at an undefeated season.

Here is our weekly breakdown of how Hauppauge's varsity athletic teams have fared in competition over the past week:

Softball: The Lady Eagles varsity softball team has won four games in the past week through a combination of solid pitching and a hot batting lineup. Hauppauge shut out East Hampton for a 14-0 victory on the road May 2, which they followed up with two wins against Huntington, 17-5, on May 5 and Elwood/John Glenn, 18-2, on May 6.

Seventh-grader Catherine Vaughn hit a two-out grand slam in the bottom of the second against Huntington, to give the Eagles the lead. Vaughn earned three runs and had six RBIs. Marietta Silliman also hit a two-run home run against Huntington.

Pitcher Nicole Ehlinger threw her third consecutive shutout to earn Hauppauge a 2-0 win over Smithtown East on Saturday.

The win brings Hauppauge's league record to 12-2, put it in second place, trailing behind Kings Park by one game. The Lady Eagles will host Eastport this Wednesday at 4 p.m.

 

Baseball: Pitcher Joe Policastro has led the Hauppauge varsity baseball team to two victories in the past week, proving a pitcher can be an asset at the plate.

Policastro hit a two-out RBI double against Eastport on May 2 to break a the tie at 5 and give Hauppauge a 6-5 victory.

Hauppauge dropped the second game in the series against Eastport, losing 7-4, before battling their way back to a 6-1 win on May 6. Policastro pitched the third game, allowing only one earned run, five hits and one walk in six innings.

The Eagles have improved their league record to 9-1, currently in first place in their division. The baseball team will host Islip on Monday at 4 p.m.

 

Girls Lacrosse: The Hauppauge girls lacrosse team continues to dominate on the field, wining their past three games in pursuit of an undefeated season.

The Lady Eagles beat Comsewogue on May 2, 16-4. Taylor Ranftle scored six goals and made two assists, followed by Jenna Vinci with four goals and one assist.

Hauppauge claimed a 11-5 victory over Bayport-Bluepoint on May 5. Jen Porretto scored four goals and one assist. Stephanie Peragallo controlled the field by winning six ground balls and five draws.

The team's third victory was during Score For A Cure on Saturday.

The Hauppauge girls lacrosse team will host Harborfields this Tuesday under the lights at 7:30 p.m.

 

Boys Lacrosse: The Hauppauge boys lacrosse team is in a must-win situation, their league record at 4-7 with three games remaining in their season. If the team can win its remaing games, the Eagles have a shot at making the playoffs.

The Eagles , on May 3. Junior Sam Llinares led the offense by scoring three goals and making three assists. Backup goalkeeper David Hwang scored the first two goals of his varsity career after the starting offensive line was benched with injuries.

The team was unable to keep the momentum going, dropping a game 10-9 to Sayville on May 5.

But, the Hauppauge boys lacrosse team rallied at the return of starter Chris Jacovino on Saturday, . The Eagles' next game is against higher-ranked Bellport on Wednesday at 7:30 p.m.
