End Of The Road For Lady Eagles Basketball

Hauppauge girls basketball loses 62-36 to North Babylon in second round of playoffs.

Hauppauge girls basketball historic post-season run was brought to a halt in the second round by an undefeated North Babylon team. 

The Lady Eagles successful and history making season came to an end Thursday night. Hauppauge lost to undefeated North Babylon (20 - 0 overall) 62-36 in the second round of the Suffolk County Class AA playoffs on Thursday night at North Babylon High School. 

“We’re disappointed that we didn’t win tonight,” said Hauppauge head coach Jamie Edson. “Obviously North Babylon is the number two seed for a reason, they’re a great team. But don’t get me wrong, we’re not [just] happy to be here [in the playoffs]. We expected to win and we just came up short today."

The team beat It was the team's first playoff game in 14 years, a major accomplishment recognized by Edson. 

Hauppauge fought to keep pace with the Lady Bulldogs in the first quarter Thursday night, trailing 15-9. Then North Babylon’s high octane offense took control of the court to take a commanding 35-16 lead at halftime.

The Lady Eagles were never able to regain the lead, as they were outscored 2--7 in the third quarter, falling behind 50-21 which put victory out of reach. 

Hauppauge defense, ranked no. 1 in Suffolk for the lowest points allowed per game,  had difficulty containing North Babylon’s freshman star Tamara Simpson. She scored 18 points, recorded 13 steals sand pulled down 10 rebounds for a triple-double. When Simpson wasn’t scoring, Charise Wilson was, as she added 15 points. 

Sophomore sensation Julie Williams, Hauppauge’s leading scorer this season, led the Lady Eagles  of fwith 12 points and junior Lauren Descalzo had 7 points.

 The Lady Eagles' offense emerged in the fourth quarter, outscoring the Bulldogs 15-12, with solid contributions coming from Williams, Descalzo and juniors Lindsey Alfano (3 points), Kasey Kephart (4 points), Jessica Caliendo (2 points) and Ciarra Santos (2 points).

 “We played the whole game and we didn’t quit," Edson said. " We have one senior any everybody else comes back next year, so next year making the playoffs won’t be a goal of ours, it will be an expectation. I know the girls that are coming back would love to make that happen.”

The Lady Eagles will graduate Alysha Handler in 2011. The team end the season with an overall league record of 14-6.
