Girls Basketball, Boys Swimming Clinch Playoff Spots

Hauppauge teams get ready for county-wide tournaments, while basketball rounds towards the last week of regular season.

Boys Basketball (3-6, 6-9) has had a busy week with three games in fives days. The Eagles stretch started with a close game against West Babylon (9-1, 13-3), who currently ranks first in League IV. The Eagles started the game leading 14-11 in the first quarter, but couldn’t hold on as West Babylon won 59-50.

Next, the Eagles lost 64-55 against Huntington (3-7, 6-9). This evens the score after the Eagles won 58-54 in December against Huntington. John Velasquez has scored 21 points in his last 2 games.

The Eagles will have a boost going into their final weeks of the season as they’ve knocked Bellport below .500 with a 59-44 win on  Feb. 2. The Eagles next game is at home against Comsewogue on Tuesday at 5:45 p.m.

Girls Basketball has shared a similar schedule as the boys, but they’ve been seeing some different results. The Eagles are currently in second place in League IV at (7-2, 12-3). Their recent 46-40 win against Bellport (6-3, 11-4) on  Feb. 2. clinches a spot in the playoffs for the first time in 14 years for the Lady Eagles. The team's losses this season came from an early match-up against Bellport and a 7-point loss from top-seeded Deer Park.

The girls next game is against Comsewogue on  Tuesday at 5:45 p.m. Julie Williams is currently first in Suffolk County with 43 three-pointers, while teammates Stephanie Peragallo and Katie Osipowich are in the top-25 for rebounds per game, and Lauren Descalzo and Lindsay Alfano lead in assists per game.

Girls and Boys track and field came in ninth place in the League IV championships held Jan 29 and 30. Below are some highlighted athletes from the events: 

Ryan Colabella(Junior)-second place in the 3200-meter run with a  9:57.76.

Alex Spinelli(Senior)-fifth place in the 55-meter hurdle with a  8.95.

CJ Starkey(Senior)-tied for third place in the high jump with a J5-8.00

Krystina Choinski(Senior)-fourth place in the 1000-meter run with a 3:10.56.

Serena Rudisel(Sophomore)-fourth place in the 600-meter run with a 1:48.05.

Rudisel, Gina Macaluso(Sophomore), Courtney Solana(Sophomore), and Choinski(Senior) finished first place in the 4x400 meter relay with a 4:26.68.

Suffolk County will hold it’s state qualifying meet at Suffolk County Community college Brentwood campus on Feb. 12 at 11 a.m.

 

Boys swimming will compete in the League II championships to be held at Hauppauge High School on Feb. 10, 4:30 p.m. The Eagles won their final two meets, 99-86 over Connetquot, and 103-77 over Harborfields on Feb. 3. The Eagles are currently in second place at (5-1, 7-1) after losing to undefeated Sayville.
