Hauppauge Girls Lacrosse Beats Brewster Bears, 13 - 4

Midfielders Christina Rienzo and Diana Rienzo win ground balls, draws to keep Hauppauge in control of the game.

The Hauppauge girls varsity lacrosse team beat the Brewster Bears, 13-4, in a charitable match at Score For A Cure. The victory is another notch in the Lady's Eagles 13-game winning streak on their way to a Division II title and the league playoffs.

The Hero: Juniors Christina Rienzo and Diana Rienzo kept the Hauppauge Lady Eagles in control of the ball, allowing them to set the pace of the game. Diana won four ground balls in the midfield while Christine grabbed two ground balls and won two draw controls.

Senior Jen Porretto continues to lead the Lady Eagles offense, scoring five goals and making five assists on Saturday.

The Turning Point: Brewster sophomore Lindsay Biondi scored the first goal just over a minute into the game, giving her team a brief 1-0 lead. The quick score woke up the Lady Eagles, who sprung into action.

Porretto and junior Jenna Vinci worked as a pair, scoring four goals in four minutes to give Hauppauge out to a 4-1 lead.

Junior Lauren Descalzo scored back-to-back goals midway through the first half, starting off a four-point rally for Hauppauge.  This gave the Lady Eagles a 9-2 lead going into halftime the proved insurmountable for the Bears, who played a much tighter defense the second half.

The Quote: "One of the things we strive to do is be a second half team," said head coach Abigail Zeltmann. "They played with a little bit better control, moving the ball up field and controlled attacks. We were a little less urgent."

The Bottom Line: The Hauppauge girls lacrosse team is 13-0 on their way to a league title and undefeated season, and shows no sign of slowing down. With three games remaining in regular league play, the Lady Eagle's toughest match will be against Mount Sinai on Thursday. Mount Sinai is currently in third place in Division II, with a 9-2 league record.

Key Stat: Porretto scored five goals and made five assists to lead Hauppauge's offense. Julie Giray won four draw controls to give the Lady Eagles control of the ball.
