Jets Fans React: Disappointing First Half, Questionable Calls

Jets Fans try to pin the blame for their team's loss in the AFC Championship while looking forward to next year.

Hauppauge’s Jets football fans gathered at The Grafton Pub off Veterans Highway for the American Football Conference championship.

They hunkered down to beer specials and wings to watch their team play the Pittsburg Steelers, the Jet’s second attempt at making the Superbowl in as many years.

Jets fans hopes were quickly dashed as the Jets fell behind 24-3 at halftime. Many gathered their coats, and headed for home hoping to avoid watching the painful loss.

“So far, t he Jets have been pitiful. They can’t start their running game, and they are playing against the best defense in the NFL,” said Jim Abrams, a Hauppauge resident. “Last week’s game was their big game. But they’re in this game and they have a tall order in front of them.”

Other die-hard Jet fans remained hopeful and optimistic, describing the Jets as a comeback team.

“At least they have scored, it’s not a goose egg up there. But it’s not over yet. I’m hopeful,” said Deb White of Central Islip.

Fans cries about the ‘nonbelievers” hit an all-time high as the Jets came out and began driving the second half, scoring while holding off the Steeler’s offense. Yet, the loss became apparently after the Jets were stopped on the 1-yard line unable to get a critical touchdown with less than 8 minutes in the third quarter.

Some pointed their fingers at reasons for their team’s loss.

“There’s been a couple of bad calls against them. But they played alright.  Roughing the kicker was a bad call, it was a big one,” said Jim M., a jets fan who did not wish to be further identified.

He had tried wearing his friend’s lucky sweatshirt, hoping the ritual would somehow change the Jets luck in the second half without success.

“I’m very, very upset, and very disappointed. If they had done it the first half, we might have had a different story.,” Whte said. “You have to play good the whole game, not just the second half. I guess I’ll had to retire my shirt for next year. “
