Record Highs Possible In Hauppauge as Temps Sizzle

Temperatures could top 93 degrees on Tuesday, experts say.

If it feels hotter than ever outside — that might actually be the truth.

Lauren Nash, a meteorologist for the National Weather Service office in Upton, said temperatures could get close to breaking or tying the record of 93 degrees set on July 16, 1999 at Islip-MacArthur Airport.

“As long as a sea breeze holds off towards the afternoon, we could get warm enough to tie or break that record,” Nash said. “ A sea breeze would cool the temperature down, bringing in cooler air off the water.”

On Monday, Islip-MacArthur recorded the official high of the day at 94 degrees for central Suffolk. The temperatures were higher than forecast on the East End, as Westhampton Beach Airport hit 95 degrees and Montauk reached 90 degrees.

As temps broke 90 across Suffolk, Nash said Monday was the second day of the heat wave. A heat wave is defined defined by a period of time when temperatures reach 90 degrees for three days or longer.

Nash said Islip-MacArthur Airport, the National Weather Service’s official record station in Suffolk, recorded a high of 90 on Sunday, marking the official start of the heat wave.

Despite the sizzling temperatures, forecasters don’t expect to issue a heat advisory on Tuesday, according to Nash. The heat index, or how hot it actually feels outside, will be lower as the daily high and dewpoint are expected to drop a few degrees.

“It won’t meet the criteria, but it’s still going to be hot,” Nash said.

Residents are advised to stay out of the direct sun during the hottest parts of the day, from noon to 6 p.m. — yard work and other chores should be done in early morning or late evening — and find air-conditioned environments. In addition, staying hydrated is critical, as the body uses more fluids as it perspires.
