The Division of Public Health aims to protect and improve the overall general health of Suffolk County residents. It runs numerous programs among its six units to monitor the health of the community at-large while tracking potential health risks and developing and implementing strategies to cope with potential dangers. Some of its well-known programs include mosquito spraying in the summer to help prevent West Nile virus and baiting raccoons to prevent rabies outbreaks. It works hand-in-hand with the Center for Disease Control to distribute vaccines for swine flu and seasonal flu outbreaks.
