The Division of Public Health aims to protect and improve the overall general health of Suffolk County residents. ItMore runs numerous programs among its six units to monitor the health of the community at-large while tracking potential health risks and developing and implementing strategies to cope with potential dangers. Some of its well-known programs include mosquito spraying in the summer to help prevent West Nile virus and baiting raccoons to prevent rabies outbreaks. It works hand-in-hand with the Center for Disease Control to distribute vaccines for swine flu and seasonal flu outbreaks.

Suffolk County's Immunization Action Program provides children with medically recommended vaccinations at low-cost orMore for free. It is more commonly known as the "Shots for Tots" program. Parents can call the office to receive information on how to have their pre-schoolers vaccinated. In the winter, seasonal flu shots are available. The Immunization Action Program also holds clinics each month at community centers, such as at the public library and churches. To find out where they will be this month, check their Web site.
