Tie-Wearing Boy Wins Award from New York Knicks

James Funaro of Nesconset will get "City Spirit" award for his fundraising for the Make-A-Wish Foundation.

The efforts of the necktie-donning Nesconset boy who raised more than $9,000 for a Make-A-Wish child will be recognized by the New York Knicks Wednesday before they tip-off against the Detroit Pistons.  James Funaro will accept January’s “Sweetwater Clifton ‘City Spirit’ Award” that honors people whose efforts have significantly helped those in need. The 7-year-old combined his efforts to break a world record for most consecutive days wearing a tie with fundraising for the Make-A-Wish Foundation, accepting donations from people from as far as Texas, Illinois and Florida. The award comes with a $2,000 donation that will be given to the Make-A-Wish Foundation of Suffolk County. Funaro’s 300 days of wearing ties raised more than $8,700 to …

Boy Wears Tie for 300 Straight Days to Raise Money for Make-A-Wish

Child who received his wish of going to Hawaii meets boy who made it all possible.

It was a big day for a very special 7-year-old. James Funaro, the boy who wore a tie for 300 consecutive days to raise money for Make-A-Wish Foundation, met the boy whose wish was granted as a result. Javier Romero, also 7 and a sufferer of Duchenne muscular dystrophy, the most severe form of the degenerative disorder, were the beneficiaries of Funaro's efforts, which raised more than $8,700. Javier and his parents will be heading to Hawaii next Saturday for eight days.
