UPDATE: Man Seriously Injured in Crash

Huntington Station resident John Melgar sustains serious head injuries and a broken leg in Thursday morning accident on Route 347.

A Huntington Station man was seriously injured in a two-car crash on Route 347 in Hauppauge Thursday morning, closing local roadways for hours.

Suffolk County police received a call at approximately 8:05 a.m. reporting an overturned truck at the Route 347 and Route 111/Wheeler Road intersection.

Glenn Staff, a Grace Construction employee, was driving a 2006 Mitsubishi construction truck eastbound on Route 347 when he went to pull into the sectioned off area between eastbound and westbound traffic at 8 a.m. Grace Industries is the construction firm hired by New York State Department of Transportation to oversee the Route 347 improvement project, according to the DOT website.

Staff's vehicle was struck from behind by a 2006 blue Subaru traveling eastbound, driven by John Melgar, 29, of Huntington Station.

Officers responding to the scene found Staff, 52, laying on the ground.  Melgar was pinned inside his car, according to police reports. It took the rescuers approximately 23 minutes to Melgar from the vehicle.

Both men were transported via ambulance to Stony Brook University Medical Center. Staff was treated for back pain and difficulty breathing. Melgar was treated for serious head injuries and a broken leg.

Police closed down Route 347 from Brooksite Drive east to Route 111. Officers also shut down Route 111 from the intersection at Townline Road north to the accident as they investigated the scene of the accident.

This caused heavy traffic to build up on local roadways including Route 347, Route 111/Wheeler Road, Veterans Highway and Townline Road, snarling drivers in the morning commute.

Portion of the roadways remained closed through 1:30 p.m., according to police, for debris cleanup.

Fourth Squad detectives are investigating the accident as at least one person was seriously injured, according to police.
