Sex Offender Registers Residence in Smithtown

School superintendent sends out letter advising residents that a sex offender has registered an address in the area.

The Hauppauge School District on Monday issued a letter to its residents informing them that a Level 1 sex offender, considered to be the lowest risk level, has taken up residence in the Smithtown area.

For a convicted sex offender registered as Level 1, law enforcement agencies do not disclose the exact address of the person.

"It is unfortunate, but necessary, that we all take this opportunity to review safety rules with our children and remind them to avoid circumstances that might increase their vulnerability," school superintendent Patricia Sullivan-Kriss said in the letter. "Please help your children keep this issue in the proper perspective by reassuring them that ours is a very safe community, but that, in this day and age, everyone needs to be alert and careful."

According to a search of the New York State sex offender registry, there are six Level 1 sex offenders and four Level 2 sex offenders residing within the 11787 zip code. A search page for convicted sex offenders can be found here.
