Hauppauge Senior Named Siemens Semifinalist

Allison Lee is the district's first semifinalist.

Hauppauge High School senior Allison Lee, was recently named a semifinalist in the 2013 Siemens Competition in Math, Science and Technology.

 Lee’s project title was “Mechanical Destruction of Bacteria using Graphene, Graphene Oxide, as well as Phase Separated Polymer Blends.” The project demonstrated that bacteria cells can be targeted and mechanically broken down in order to kill bacteria without the use of antibiotics or other drugs.

“We are tremendously proud of Allison Lee who is the first Hauppauge student to be recognized in the prestigious annual Siemens Foundation Competition,” said Hauppauge Superintendent of Schools Patricia Sullivan-Kriss. “Allison will go on to compete in the Intel STS and several other competitions this year. She also is working on publishing her research in conjunction with her mentor at Stony Brook University.”

The 2013 Siemens Competition generated a record 2,440 students registered for this year’s competition and a total of 1,599 projects were submitted for consideration.

 “These incredible students have invested significant time and energy to advance research and exploration in critical fields,” said David Etzwiler, CEO of the Siemens Foundation. “I commend all of the students for their outstanding achievements.”
