Human West Nile Case Reported in Smithtown

Suffolk County Health Department says its the fourth human case this year.

Suffolk authorities confirmed there is a reported human case of West Nile Virus in the Town of Smithtown area. 

A Town of Smithtown male resident over age 50 had fever, chills and fatigue in September was confirmed to have West Nile virus, according to Suffolk County Department of Health. He was never hospitalized and has recovered. 

This is the fourth confirmed human case of West Nile virus in 2013. Previously, there were two reported cases in the Town of Brookhaven and one in the Town of Huntington. All three individuals were over age 50, were hospitalized and recovered. 

This rate is comparable the human cases of West Nile Virus in 2012In 2012, four human cases of West Nile virus were reported, while the county found 210 mosquito samples and 38 birds test positive that year. In 2013, the county has so far recorded 158 mosquito samples and four birds carrying the virus.

Dr. James Tomarken, commissioner of Suffolk County Health Services, said about 20 percent of people infected with West Nile will show symptoms, which include fever, headache and body aches, an occasional skin rash and swollen lymph glands.  Fewer will develop severe neurological complications such as encephalitis or meningitis.
