Nonprofit to Unveil Home Project for Veterans in Islandia
Long Island Home Builders Care Inc. offers six veterans the chance to buy specially designated homes.
Islandia-based nonprofit Long Island Home Builders Care Inc. on Tuesday will unveil plans for a six-home subdivision in Islandia specially designated for affordable housing for veterans of recent wars.
"Each wants the American dream of owning a home, but finding affordable homes on Long Island is difficult at best, let alone attempting to do it during a transition from military to civilian life. Without help, these heroes will be forced to leave Long Island," the organization said in a statement.
The project encompasses a six-lot subdivision where homes will be built for six veterans, who were selected from among 130 applicants and chosen by a Veterans of Foreign Wars panel. The six veterans will purchase these homes for $199,000.
Oftentimes, the Long Island Home Builders Care Inc. said, veterans return from war only to face hardships including health problems, juggling work and education and the inability to find affordable housing – an uphill battle for sure.
"The Veterans Way subdivision will provide these veterans and their families with a true nurturing community of comrades in arms, surrounded by those who can support, understand and relate to each other," the organization said in a statement.
The project will be unveiled today at 11 a.m. at Veterans Way, located off of Motor Parkway about a quarter-mile west of Old Nicholls Road, in Islandia.
