5 People Injured in Route 111 Accident

Suffolk County police said two-car collision closed Route 111 at the Route 347 intersection briefly Thursday night.

Five people were injured in a two-car collision at the Route 347 and Route 111 intersection late Thursday night, Suffolk County Police said. 

Police said a 17-year-old woman was driving a black SUV westbound on Route 347/Nesconset Highway at approximately 10:12 p.m. when she attempted to make an illegal left-hand turn onto Route 111. She collided with a black SUV traveling eastbound on Route 347 that had four passengers. 

Multiple ambulances responded to the scene of the accident. All five people were transported via ambulance to Stony Brook University Hospital for non-life threatening injuries, according to police.

Police said the 17-year-old driver was given a summons for attempting to make the left turn onto Route 111. 

There have been several serious accidents at or near the Route 347/111 intersection over the past year including the death of Marlene Strober on July 1, 2011 and John Melgar, 29, of Huntington Station was serious injured on Sept. 15, 2011. Most recently, two people were hospitalized after an early morning accident on  Dec. 3, 2011.
